I went to a presentation by the Center for Creative Leadership about creating coaching cultures recently. I came away with a great 2 x 2 grid that explains the difference between good and great coaching.
Some people’s coaching focuses on the problem and the “coach” telling the individual what to do about it – and as you already know from previous blogs, that’s not what makes great coaching….which is at the intersection of asking questions and looking for solutions. Yes, you have to define the problem well first, but then it’s the solution focus that gets us to action, and both of these happen best when the individual thinks it through for themself with questions to prompt that thinking.
So what will you do today to ask good questions that help to define the problem first, explore the issue, and then to move towards the solution?
