Mentor coaching is “observed coaching with feedback against a set of competencies, that sharpens the coach’s all-round presence” (Clare Norman, 2018).
For ICF credentialing, at least three of your ten hours must be one-to-one (though mentor coaching is for life, not just credentialing!). Some people opt to do all of their sessions one-to-one. Others prefer to do a combination of group (face-to-face or virtual) and one-to-one.
How the sessions work
Before the first session
You will need to record a coaching session with one of your thinkers, ideally of about 30 minutes for a complete, rounded session.
Bring your worst and your best recordings of your coaching to mentor coaching: you will learn a huge amount from listening to your worst, that you wouldn’t pick up from always presenting your best. All of the feedback for you will be in the spirit of growth, not judgement.
In the session
We will listen to the recording together in our session over Zoom.
We will stop the recording after you have completed the coaching agreement with your thinker, to determine how clear your contract is; then we will stop and start the recording to reflect on your use of the coaching competencies.
Between sessions
I will ask you at the end of each session to own your strengths and to decide which competencies you will be practising in your coaching between sessions.
Your next recording should reflect what you have been practising so that we can see your progress.
For ICF credentialing, your mentor coaching should be spread over a minimum of 3 months.

What differentiates Clare Norman Coaching Associates mentor coaches from many other mentor coaches you might meet as you explore ICF credentialing
1) We (Nicky, Sheela and Clare) understand the competencies and the assessment markers inside out, back-to-front and upside-down
2) We know what the assessors are looking for
3) We are thorough and rigorous with the process
4) We take you further than you think you might be able to stretch in your coaching - we are not just about getting you to a low bar
5) We do not treat this as a tick-box exercise - it is a growth experience
6) We enable you to bring your own style to the competencies - we would never want to put you into a homogenous box where every coach is the same
7) We enable you to work to your coaching strengths as that's what the assessors will be looking for - they want you to pass!
8) We will tell you if we think a recording is a risk to submit (though we are unable to tell you whether it will pass as that is the job of the assessor)
9) We develop you as a coach vs. assess you - no judgement here
10) We each commit to mentor coaching for ourselves every year (not just for credentialing purposes), to keep our own coaching sharp
We are proud of this difference that makes the difference.
