One of the major elements of coaching is asking questions, such that the other person can come to their own conclusions.
I found some interesting quotes about questions this week that I’d like to share with you:
Neil Postman
“Everything we know has its origins in questions. Questions, we might say, are the principal intellectual instruments available to human beings.”
Suzanne Langer
“…answers establish an edifice of facts; but questions… make the frame in which (the) picture of facts is plotted. They make more than the frame, they give the angle of perspective, the palette, the style in which the picture is drawn… “
Terry Winograd & Fernando Flores
“Ultimately, we are seeking a better understanding of what it means to be human. In this quest, progress is not made by finding the ‘right’ answers, but by asking meaningful questions…”
Edward de Bono
“Asking a question is the simplest way of focusing thinking . . . asking the right question may be the most important part of thinking.”
What do you think about questions as our greatest intellectual instrument? How can questions help us to help ourselves and to help others. Let me know what you think in the comments box below.
