Staying Sharp, Safe and Sane: A Monthly Blog for Coaches – August 2026

Welcome to the sixth edition of this monthly blog, built around the framework from Mentor Coaching: A Practical Guide: mentor coaching keeps us sharp; supervision keeps us safe and sane. Each month, I share reflections from my mentor coaching and supervision work, organised around those three themes. If you missed the first edition and want to know more about the shape of this blog, you’ll find it here.
This month’s three reflections are below.

Staying Sharp

Practical skills, techniques and insights that enhance coaching competence.

You’ve likely seen a good many mentor coach specialisation awards being highlighted on LinkedIn over the past few weeks. They let you know that the mentor coach is qualified by the ICF to mentor coach.

I’m proud to have been offering mentor coaching to groups and 1-1 for 1110 hours over eleven years and to have had that experience recognised.

It gives me great joy to support coaches to bring their full, wonderfully unique selves to their coaching.

In September, I’ll be offering one final (ever) group for aspiring ACCs and PCCs and renewing ACCs. There are still a couple of spaces if you’d like to hop on board. I’ll be continuing with aspiring MCC groups into 2027 until my retirement.

Here’s some recent feedback:

“Once again you curated a lovely group and offered a safe space for us to reflect and learn. Having been in a number of different group settings over the years, I know that they’re not all equal and therefore I don’t underestimate the work you’ve put in along the way to create something that feels so easeful!”

“You have an amazing talent for creating a focused and impactful learning environment. And your insights were incredibly helpful. I took away so much from the process.”

And if you’re wondering about the stained-glass window that also appears on my book, that’s my brand, a representation of a sunbeam that is warm, nurturing, and enticing you towards its light.

Staying Safe

Ethics, boundaries, professional standards, risk management.

Here’s something I took to supervision recently that felt like it needed airing so that I could clear my head and stay grounded for my clients.

I wrote on LinkedIn about my 2028 retirement.  A long way off yet, but there were lots of reactions that I suppose I didn’t really expect. Probably because I had already thought them through ahead of time, I was surprised at coaches’ assumptions about what retirement might mean in practice, but maybe there’s something else going on for people about their own lives. Perhaps these are projections that need some attention. A projection meaning something that you project onto others that is really about you: we all do it.

Maybe it’s worth peering under the covers for yourself about what retirement, rewirement, renaissance (as I’m calling it) might mean in your life.  And not just projections about that subject but all projections and judgments – none of us is immune.

You can read my response to people’s reactions over on LinkedIn, but what I really want to get across here is that we all need to be looking at our projections in a supervision setting so that we don’t bring them into the coaching room.

Staying Sane

Self-care, sustainability, emotional resilience, perspective

I’m hosting one further free love-led hour, for humans only.

It’s been described as very moving and thought-provoking, beautiful, special; resonance abounds in the room.

It’s a taste of my book, Reclaiming Love in Coaching, and a doorway to the human connection day I’m hosting with UK ICF in September 2026 and the Coaching from Love retreat I’m holding in 2027.

🗓️  Date: 4th September, ⏰ Time: 14:00 BST: Link to register for 4th September

The session is on Zoom. If you’ve been to one of the last two, you are most welcome again, as you will arrive differently and receive it differently.

There is no charge for the session, and I look forward to seeing you there.

That is it for this month. I hope there is something here that sparks a reflection, a conversation with a peer, or a small experiment in your next session.
