Thanks for all your good wishes as I look for my perfect role. And to those of you who think it was a brave move, let’s reflect on that.
Some years ago, I came to the realisation that you need to declare your needs, so that others can help you in your quest – whatever that quest is. Many more opportunities open up for you when others are looking out for them on your behalf. One time I was looking for a leadership development role, and within a week of talking to a few trusted leaders about that, one of them told me about an opportunity that I grabbed. Once I had achieved as much as I felt I could in that role, I declared my needs again, and shaped my current role in Employee Experience. So it works.
Things have moved on since then. Back then, I was talking to the people in my direct network. I now have you, this tribe, as part of my network, so I’d be foolish not to declare my needs to you, in the hope that this global network could be my eyes and ears to many more opportunities that I couldn’t possibly know about myself.
Back to bravery then. It’s time our culture changed, to be one where you feel you can have conversations with your work supervisor or career counsellor that might lead you out of their team, but into another team in your organisation – or out of it, if that’s the right move for you. It’s so much better for us as a business, if we can support you to find a role internally, keeping your valuable skills and expertise, rather than you feeling that it’s easier to look outside the company.
One of my beliefs is that organizations will get much more value if you are in a role that you love, that matches your strengths and passions. If you are in a role now that isn’t giving you that level of fulfillment, it’s time to figure out what you DO want and need to feel good about your work everyday.
So if you are looking for another role, here’s my challenge to you. If you haven’t done so already, declare your needs to people around you who can help you to find another role. Get really clear about what you are looking for first. The clearer you are, the better chance you have of finding that perfect role for you. You might be surprised how helpful they can be.
One more plug then…if you didn’t already read my Maverick Job Search post, please do so now, so that:
a) you understand the context for what I am talking about above
b) you can help me in my search
for which, I thank you in advance.
