Structure, Stimulation and Strokes

I’ve been reading (and have shared some via twitter if you want to check them out) a lot of blog posts in the past few days about New Year’s Resolutions.

Anyway, in a similar vein, I’d like to encourage all of you supervisors out there to adopt a New Year’s Resolution to give your people more structure, stimulation and strokes.

Everyone needs a certain amount of structure.  You know how they say that kids need boundaries so they feel safe – well that’s the same for us adults too.  Some of us need more structure than others, but we all need some.  So what structure are you giving to your people this New Year?  How will you gauge how much is enough for each individual on your team?

We also all need stimulation – challenge.  Again, everyone has their own “just right” levels of stimulation.  Too much and you will stress them out, but too little and they will be bored and restless.  So what stimulation are you giving to your people?  What’s the right amount for each person?

Last, but by no means least, we all need strokes – preferably positive ones. I’ve written

about strokes in the past.  Read more about it:

The stroke economy

It’s all about feedback.  Giving frequent feedback about the little things will help a person to build into a high performer over time.  No feedback will leave them feeling unappreciated and undervalued (those are negative strokes).  So what resolution will you put in place around giving more frequent positive strokes to your people this year?
