My new job

I have a new job.  Let me tell you a little more about it and the story of how i got it.  I share this story because I think it highlights a few things about managing your own career, so it might be useful food-for-thought for you.

First, what is it?  Official title Design Architect, Innovations and Employee Experience, Talent Development.  Does that give you any idea what I’ll be doing?  I doubt it.  So I’ve decided to call myself the Talent Development Ambassador instead, which gets a bit closer to what it is…I think of an ambassador as someone who represents others.  In this case, I’ll be representing the employee and/or supervisor to be sure that they get what they need to help them to lead themself and lead others.  I’ll be their voice, if you like.  What’s Talent Development, I hear you ask.  It’s a new team, that addresses all of the aspects of people management at the various points in  person’s career.  It brings together Capability Development, Performance Management, Career Management and Transitions all under one (virtual) roof to help people along their journey, right from pre-boarding through on-boarding, learning and growing on-the-job, changing roles, and then on to leaving “Company Future”.

Part of my job is to tell the talent development story, so that people know what they can do to manage their career through its lifecycle.  I hope that we can make this story so much clearer for people than it is today.

So that’s the “what” of the job.  Tomorrow, I’ll talk about why I decided to change roles.

And by the way, this has been such a useful post for me to write as it’s really helped me to get clearer about my role too!  That’s the power of blogging to help you to refine your thinking.  If you haven’t ever blogged, try it – you’ll be surprised at how clear you can get about your opinion or perspective.
