One of the things I am working on is an app that will help supervisors when they go into conversations with their people about their performance (as opposed to career type conversations). I’ve outlined what I think those conversations are, and I’d love to get your insights about additions or edits needed before I start to develop the conversations themselves.
So here’s the story first, and then the conversation topics:
- People leave organizations because of their supervisor
- People want meaningful work and meaningful conversations with their supervisors about that work
- Yet supervisors are unclear on their role and are not held accountable for developing their people
- What if we could give the supervisor a set of conversation starters that would help their people to find meaning?
And here are the conversations that I think would help:
- Welcome to your new role
- How will we work together?
- What goals does the business need you to meet?
- Here’s a new piece of work for you
- Holding you accountable to that work
- Here’s some feedback
- Something goes wrong (personally or professionally)
- You’re moving on
- In the moment touch-points and recognition
Or if you like to see things pictorially:
What do you think? Have I missed any? Would you edit any of them in any way?
I’d love to get your thoughts as this is for you in the end (whether you are a supervisor or a supervisee).
